Chiropractic was discovered in 1895. Chiropractic is a science, art and philosophy of healing.  It is a drug-free healthcare system that helps the body heal itself, through its own natural processes.  The treatment of Chiropractic is through spinal adjustments is to correct vertebral subluxations.  Vertebral Subluxations are misalignments of the vertebrae, pelvis, sacrum and coccyx.  The misalignments cause irritation to nerve roots that creates discomfort all over the body, from head to toes and everything in between.

Chiropractic is primarily used to treat back pain but can also treat pain in shoulders, knees, hips, arms, ankles, wrists, and feet.  It can help alleviate arthritic pain as well as chronic pain and chronic headaches.  Because Chiropractic treatment focuses on the health of the neuromusculoskeletal system, it helps to both increase and maintain joint flexibility which increases your range of motion.

If you are having persistent pain, especially back pain, you should probably visit a chiropractor because they are likely able to help.  Even if you have no symptoms evident, such as pain, it is still a good idea to visit a chiropractor once every few months in order to maintain the health of your neuromusculoskeletal system and to prevent potentially serious problems from developing.  Remember that the absence of symptoms is not the same thing as being healthy.

No they do not.  The area adjusted may ache for a while after the adjustment, though this generally occurs only after the first few adjustments.  If you were in pain before the adjustment often the ache will not even be noticed beside the relief the adjustment will provide, though it will likely be several adjustments before the problem is solved.
